In partnership with the Province of Nova Scotia, the Yarmouth & Area Chamber of Commerce is offering 7 professional development classes starting in September 2021. These 10 week courses are free, customized to your needs and provincially certified, with a value in excess of $1,500 per person.

Seats are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first serve basis.

Classes will be virtual so you must have a computer with a webcam to interact properly.

About Rick McMullen

Rick McMullen has 15 years of experience as a teacher and instructor and is skilled with course customization, facilitation, diplomacy and conflict resolution. With an education in business and commercial design, Rick has kept his feet firmly planted in the marketing and advertising world, and the technology around those activities. He has instructed programs in marketing, business management, sales, leadership, computers and software use.

Basic Computer Skills

Mondays 8:30am-12:30pm | Starting September 13th, 2021 for 10 weeks

The concentration of this program is on word processing and spreadsheet skills. The level of complexity in this program is tailored to the participants and is intended for those who feel they don’t have a strong foundation in computer use in a business environment. By completing the curriculum, program participants will be able to:

  • Navigate the Windows environment
  • Save, open, find & structure files & folders
  • Develop text based documents using Microsoft Word
  • Plan, build and use spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel

Topics could include:

  • Financial recordkeeping
  • Understanding reporting requirements
  • Recording business transactions
  • Reading financial statements & reports
  • Using financial data for decision making

Social Media for Business

Mondays 5:00pm-9:00pm | Starting Sept 13th for 10 weeks
Thursdays 8:30am-12:30pm | Starting Sept 16th for 10 weeks

Those who take this course will leave with a strong understanding as to what to post on Social Media, when to post it, how to schedule it to save time, how to design it, and how to read the data to ensure you’re maximizing your efforts.

Topics could include:

  • What type of content works with real examples
  • Establishing your brand image (colors/fonts)
  • Graphic design for Social Media using Canva
  • Ad copy – what to write with your posts
  • How to create a content calendar
  • Facebook & Instagram stories

She helps create happier and more productive workplaces by enhancing trust, improving leadership, and developing communication skills. Financial Management

Fridays 8:30am-12:30pm | Starting Sept 17th, 2021 for 10 weeks

This course will enable you to be able to carry on informed and intelligent conversations with your accountant. It is designed to take accounting principles that may have seemed complex and very ‘math’ based and getting past those roadblocks to arrive at understanding. This program should make the often uncomfortable hat of ‘accounting’ or ‘book keeping’ easier to wear.
